My Reviews
An insightful novel I read because of the Kite Runner. After finishing this book I've read other works about Afghanistan and Pakistan, finally stopping because it got to be depressing. I recommend this book to clubs as it will generate some interesting conversations/debates about cultures.
We thought this book was very addictive and profoundly sad. We never knew about the Vel'd'Hiv roundup in Paris in 1942. Sarah's journey through hell and Julia's obsession with finding out about Sarah's journey in modern day was very interesting and creative by the author, Tatiana de Rosnay.
Our group can't figure out the allure to this book. Gilbert is funny and a good writer who really exposed herself and her darkest days. She gave way too much info while in the Ashram which lost all of us.
It wasn't his best but there was a lot of character development, thriller, mystery, and silliness.
If you read The DaVinci Code then you don't need to bother reading this. Additionally, its NOT a book club book. We stopped reading and just met since there's not much to discuss. We advise to skip it!
Enjoyed the book but had to stick with it at the beginning because its such a sad story. The saddest part is this is a true story. Jennette Walls is a gifted writer and a remarkable survivor!
We thought the characters were interesting and provided some great conversation at our discussion. A great pick for a book club as well as interesting history I never knew much about!
Good character development for book club discussion but I just didn't like this book at all!
A very good historical fiction book. Interesting and informative dating way back and how the church suppressed all information about 'embarrassing' events. This is a very long book and not a quick read BUT a worthwhile read.
Hilarious, laugh out loud fun. A mature book that most of us can identify with to some degree. Great fun and great fun reviewing at a meeting!
The book was interesting from an American history side. The writer was excellent.
At first it was tough to get used to the story being told from a dog's point of view. However, once I got used to that this book was so very sweet, beautiful and insightful. We highly recommend this book!
Very very good book. Good characters, historical fiction period and good for group discussion. There aren't any discussion questions out there so we had to come up with our own.
A simple book with no substance. Good read for a girl in middle school or high school. From a book club point of view with women who read contemporary and historical fiction it was a waste of time.
Great subject. First third of book is compelling then it gets a bit over the top but overall a very good book from a true story. Book provided very good conversation at the discussion meeting.
Interesting story line. Good book for book club discussions.
A very good book and we decided we liked it more than we realized after we discussed it.
There are two stories in one book. The author weaved two separate stories into one title with the common thread being the train to and from London. Well written but found the stories and characters boring. A lot of character development was missing and too much description on pointless topics. Majority of our club felt it was a boring & pointless but quick read.
One of our favorite books ever. So emotional on every level, sad, happy, mad, curious. Great discussion book. A must read!!!!
