My Reviews
This is one of the few books that haunted me for months. I just could not shake the image of the characters. And the magic of the dogs was an essential component making this book special. It's a long read, but well worth the time.
Perhaps I was expecting too much. This was nothing new in the Holocaust saga. I didn't think it was that well written either. I'm glad I read it, but it's no competition for other classic Holocaust/World War II stories. The key itself was the only new gimmick and everything about that was predictable. Too many other great books to waste time on this one.
I read this book a few years ago, and I can still remember how powerfully it affected me. The story is unique and the characters charismatic. It is interesting and entertaining and unlike any other book I've ever read. I loved it.
Boring!!! If you're really into spirituality, you'll probably love this. I thought it was tedious and a bit silly. Yes--the daughter's death was tragic, but that's NOT what the book is about. This one is highly overrated. But it's not politically correct to say this. Too bad. I still hated this book.
It took me a little while to get used to the letter format. But I loved these characters whom we meet only through their own words. And the words are so graceful and eloquent. This is a quick and satisfying read set in a time and place about which most of us know little. Now I'd love to visit this island.
