My Reviews
This book was a delightful surprise to read. The characters were wonderful, the story kept your attention and the animals touched your heart. A completely new look at the circus world.
I found this book hard to get into. I had a difficult time relating to any of the characters. It was too dark for me. One member of book club had seen the play and loved it so she recommended the book. Most of the members of book club could not finish the book. I was disappointed and really wanted to like the book.
Jeannette Walls wrote a moving memoir about growing up often homeless with parents who lacked not only the financial means but all the parenting skills necessary to raise their children. The kids are spunky and resilent in dealing with it but at great costs to each of them. I was quite touched by how forgiving the kids were. And Jeannette was able to rise above this background and move out of this tragic situation. I was awestruck when I finished the book.
This was a beautifully written story about a family who are confronted with evil. The family's love for each other is inspiring and the clever use side story about dog breeding and training was delightful. Many parallels to Hamlet and it was fun to review the play after reading the book. Great book for discussion.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a classic example of a great mystery novel, just longer. Once I started it I could not put it down. Can't wait to read the sequel.
I usually don't like short stories but this is one of the best I have read. With the thread of Olive throughout the book and the theme of relationships and coping, it still read somewhat like a full length novel. Each story provides much for discussion as does Olive herself.
I don't dislike many books but this is one of the worst I have read. I enjoyed his first two books but this was a huge disappointment. I was excited to read the mystery and intrigue set in Washington, DC but it was so poorly written that it was laughable. The main character Robert Langdon was a shadow of himself in the previous novels. He did not carry the story or the book. The other characters were caricatures and no one captured the reader's sympathy or even dislike. They were so unbelievable.
I have always wanted to visit China and Maarten Troost gave me a lot to consider in making this decision. The SMOG, the public hygiene issues all combined to make me not want to go. But then after our book club had a wonderful discussion of the book, lead by one of our members who lived and traveled in China for several years, I really may still want to go. But having said all that, the book is a fun, bird's eye view of live in modern day China. It's reads like a journal and travelogue and kept me laughing even when I was amazed at the smog and lack of hygiene exhibited by the Chinese.
Well written. Amazing story and great for discussion at book lub.
I read A Gentleman in Moscow first and liked it so much I wanted to read Towles’ first book. It was very different but I was not disappointed. It’s an interesting read with flawed characters but a great look at that era in New York. I highly recommend this book and await another book by this excellent writer.
