Incredible story
Very unusual narrative structure--to have a collective narrative. I found it effective--some members had trouble becoming absorbed into the story.
A wonderful new portrait of what introverts are & why as well as how they can be valuable in and to the world.
Not a well-constructed story.
It does bring the characters back to life--very convincingly. But it saves a lot of the action and important revelations for late in the novel, making it slow in places. Enjoyable but not riveting.
Makes me think some of the scenes of how the office is structured are real. And I thought how the character just wanted to go back to her normal life were very well portrayed. Read in one sitting on a great summer afternoon.
Such an incredible account of not only Churchill during the Blitz, but the British people. His choice to use the diaries from people who worked with churchill and his children is such a great choice because we see him from all sides, behind the scenes, late at night, in small moments that make you love Churchill even more. I was drawn to the book inspired by his words—I finished the book with such affection for him, and such admiration for the British people. Just a remarkable book and one which I cherish. Was hard to say goodbye.
Great book for grads surprisingly because she tells you how to find out the most area for a person to excel. Grit is a product of passion and perseverance, as well as effort.
Very fun take on the gothic genre—pushes the boundaries of what we think about when we think about some of the core symbols of the gothic genre—like castles as symbols of the past; monsters; and unrelenting surprises, even from the narrator herself.
Very helpful suggestions
Solid, gripping storytelling. You knew you were in good hands. Liked the psychology element, combined with the art element.
So many topics to discuss--redemption and retribution, friendship, character's intentions.
Also, FYI, the Lincoln Highway is Rte. 30
My book club had a great discussion about this book--about women's power and how we shape it to fit the contours of the people in our lives and the society we live in--whatever era it may be.
Very evocative and informative
A novel way to look at world history
