My Reviews
The story is rich with three main characters who are each full of personality...a fantastic book!
The author knew and wrote about events in her grandmother's life but those events were not detailed with much emotion. The book lacked depth leaving me ambivalent about continuing to read it. I did finish the book, however, I considered the ending weak.
I found the story mysterious and interesting from page one until the end. The author writes with vivid descriptive appeal and the fairy tales within the story added even more depth. I loved this book!
Even though I found the book to be disturbing, I can see why it appeals to adolescents. There were big messages in the story and it was well written but I did not find it entertaining. I felt like I was reading a book that a middle school English teacher would assign, like "Lord of the Flies".
Much of the story revolved around being inside a serial killer's head. The writing was descriptive lending itself to some gruesome moments. Mental illness was a central theme and was portrayed accurately although a couple of details were questionable. Even though it is not the type of book I would typically ready, I did like the mix of crime and psychology.
This book was a challenge to read meaning you had to pay attention or find yourself saying "You lost me there." It was entertaining and smart because while the story was about grief (or ignoring grief) there was plenty of humor throughout the book. The author developed the characters well and he reminded me how much I like to visit Maine.
This book was simultaneously funny and sad with several moments of debauchery. Taboo topics are met with humor. I was hooked by the end of the first page.
Repetitive to the point of wondering why this writer is trying so hard to sell his concepts.
Absolutely DULL.
