My Reviews
After I stopped comparing 11 year-old Flavia with my 11 year-old granddaughter I enjoyed the book more, reminding myself that Flavia is fiction. She was almost growing up as an only child in a old house surrounded with old things so she most likely was more mature than other girls her age. The author conveys Flavia's lonliness at never having known her mother and her longing to have affection from her father without ever mentioning it. Flavia truly is a curious little heroine.
The authors' use of a series of letters to write an novel is a very interesting concept. The letters made the characters come alive, helping the reader to really get to know them.
Story is an interesting concept. For the most part the characters were well developed, however the story ended rather abruptly leaving some unanswered questions.
I first read this book when it was published in the 60s and it is the only book I have ever read more than twice! Harper Lee\'s message is as powerful today as it was when she wrote it.
