Our book club really enjoyed this selection. We learned a lot about racing and the dog's point of view was so appealing. Funny and often bittersweet, it kept us all entertained.
It is the story of a dissatisfied wife of a wealthy Creole businessman, set in 1899, and her gradual change as she awakens to a life of her own. Some members disliked the main character's behavior and the ending of the book, but it provided for a lengthy and lively discussion. Chopin's writing allows for people to have different takes on characters and actions.
The author comingles Henrietta's story with her scientific research in an informative, believable narrative. Our book club learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
A present-day murder mystery parallelling early history of the Mormon faith makes for an informative, eye-opening read. The characters are interesting, but even more so is the strange history of polygamy practiced in the U.S.
An insightful and descriptive collection of short stories Ft. Hood families, their lives inside the base, their trials and fears revolving around the soldiers and their experiences. Though fictional, the stories embrace truths about war injuries, both physical and mental, infidelity, hope, and coping.
A semi-autobiographical tale of an American girl meeting and eventually marrying her true love in Paris. She includes recipes of food involved in her stories of life in Paris. The book is fun, but not great literature. An easy summer read.
The novel was very informative on the glassworks process, filled with descriptions of the famous Tiffany lampshades created by the women workers. It also provided interesting characters and historical data from the period. It is told from Clara's point of view, leading at times to overlong emotional spurts that detracted from the flow. Pictures of the pieces made would have contributed to the book.
Delightful, heartwarming, with lovable characters and a determined plot
The author's approach to Down Syndrome and family relations provides a canvas for broader issues of rejection and acceptance, worth and redemption, choices and consequences.
