My Reviews
So the book itself is pretty simple and too conveniently contrived. The subject matter however was very interesting and led to a wonderful discussion! We all wrote lists, then passed them to our neighbor and talked about how uncomfortable it would be to comeplete someone else's list. Our consensus was that this could have been a great book if it was taken to the next level from a writing standpoint.
I loved that this book was written from the perspective and with the vocabulary of the dog! It was like getting to be the fly on the wall on a heartbreaking and multi-faceted story. I would definately recommend. Not the most challenging book to read (which can be nice, right?) but gave us a lot to talk about.
Very funny, quirky & entertaining with some good entertaining tips. Great if you are looking for a non-serious selection that will make you laugh!
I loved this book. The story is incredibly human and personal. It's a little about the issues in Africa, a little about sports, but it is mostly a personal tale from a positive, hard-working individual who came from Sudan, lived in a refugee camp, immigrated to America and became a track star. This is not the story of a victom like so many of these books are! Lopez was able to convey humor and insight throughout his story.
Wow - Just when you think it all figured out, this book keeps you guessing. Great read!
I enjoyed this book and the story immensely. It was fun to be transported to another time through a relateable character in a circumstance that is relative to life today.
The main character shares her thoughts, feelings and flaws with you which makes her interesting. You feel as though you've walked in her shoes, worn her dress and swigged her gin.
So it's not all together bad, but it drags on. The characters it focused on were not entirely interesting or maybe a little 2 dimensional.
Lots of details in the writing that didn't move the story forward or make it more interesting. i.e. the writer describes the a travel itinerary in more detail than she does how characters feel or react to certain situations.
The book is written in mixed sequence, mixing "before" and "after" from different points of view so it keeps you interested and keeps you from having to hear one character drone on and on.
I wish the author had expanded on what is revealed in the ending more.
