My Reviews
I am a very fast reader, and this book is so beautifully written that not only did I HAVE to read it slowly, I literally HAD to read sentences four and five times because they were so beautiful, even poetic. The writing can take a bit to get used to. I looked at it a little like music. The story itself was haunting and the end...you have to read it!
There are SO many things to discuss in this book. "Death" is the narrator, and I was fascinated by his voice. Relationships are key, there are major themes of abandonment and guilt, and I love the theme of the redemptive power of reading, words and books. Also, it's a different perspective to see Nazi Germany through the eyes of poor German citizens that did not sympathize with the cause and in fact made very dangerous choices in order to show mercy to the Jews.
