My Reviews
This book reads like a soap opera, but don't hold that against it. It is thoroughly engrossing and you will not be able to put it down. This book is quite historically accurate, though there are places where the author takes creative liscense as is her perogative. Nevertheless, you will be inspired to research the history for yourself, both to learn more and to see where it diverges.
There is discussion aplenty with this book. The discussion guide is merely supplemental. Topics include the characters' motivatons, roles of women in society then and now, and did the author's portrayal of history make for a better story. If you are a fan of historical fiction, this book is for you.
The setting of this book is the most intriguing part. I found out how much I didn't know about nineteenth-century China and it's culture. Of course, I had to learn more about footbinding though that is incidental to this particular story. The emotional journey of the characters is very relatable one and (without giving anything away) I loved the way it ended. This is a well-told, captivating story which you will enjoy reading. The only criticism I can make is that it was hard to maintain a lengthy discussion on this one.
I want to finish this book. I really do. I like the characters and the story is interesting. The writing style, however, is dense and distracting. The endless literary and cultural references are too much. I really get it that the style is meant to illustrate that the main character has lived in a bubble of sorts. She must rely on what she has read or seen in movies to interpret her own life experiences. Still, it's like aspic salad; you have to scrape off all the extraneous jelly to get to the meat. I will finish the book, but schedule lots of time if you want to try this one. It is a unique read and a good choice if you're looking for something a little different.
