My Reviews
The story was hard to follow and nothing really happened. I was always waiting for the point to the whole book. One thing I must say though is that her writing was very descriptive. You really got a feel for that particular era. One person in our book club quite liked it but most found it very slow. We did have a good discussion though.
Didn't want to put it down until I finished it although it was predictable in places. Knowing that it could be true made you sympathize with both mothers.
We at our book club enjoyed this book. Had quite a good group discussion. Very discriptive writing. Stories were enjoyable.
Excellent book. Hard to keep characters straight at the beginning, but once you got to know them it was easier. Kept you reading to see what was going to happen. Recommend highly to other book clubs.
Could have shortened the book, as there was a lot of pointless information in it. Poorly written and misleading as the book was not at all about the 'girl'. I will not read the other two books in the trilogy.
It was a very good book club book. We had a good discussion. Is a good book for women to read. Quite inspiring.
Although the book was not well liked by our bookclub we did have a good discussion. Some thought there were parts of the book that were contrived and the characters at times not believable. It made us all think about refugees and their plight. It is a topic not often talked about.
Not a whole lot of substance to the book. Gave good insight into the way the people live in vietnam. A lot of time spent on their food. Not a very interesting storyline. Ho hum.
Was a good book but not a great book. Our discussion was slow but maybe that was just us.
An enjoyable easy read. Made you examine your own life as to what am I doing to make a change in the world. Everyone in our club enjoyed it.
Very good read. Everyone in america should read this book. Disturbing that something like this could happen in a so called free and civilized country. Hopefully it will never happen again.
Shame on USA!
An ok book. Interesting enough to keep you reading it. Our club didn't have a great discussion on it but others might.
I certainly don't know what all the hype is about.nothing special about this book. A glorified harlequin romance, if it can be called romance.
Was hard to follow at times because there were a lot of characters. Was well written otherwise.
Not a great book for club discussion but it was a good mystery.
Great development of characters. Will make me look at homeless people differently. Gutwrenching at times. Everyone should read it.
Was slow at times. Lots of descriptive reading. Gives some insight to that type of lifestyle of keeping up with the neighbours at all costs. Although I do not understand that being more important than the well being of your family. However our bookclub had a good discussion.
Had a good discussion at book club, but half of our members had trouble believing much of the events described. We enjoyed reading it and would recommend it.
Our club enjoyed it. Gave you insight into the dark world of Internet scams and how easily people fall for it. A bit confusing at times and some parts were like reading a second book. But our club had a good discussion.
Just didnt get it. Although our club had a good discussion but none of us really got it. There were some really well written parts but there was no flow between all of her ideas. Did not make sense to us.
Interesting book. Our book club had a good discussion with the help of the guide questions. Without them our discussion would have been limited as we felt the book a little flat as far as character development.
First third of the book was like reading a travel magazine. The rest of the book was very predictable. For all the travelling she did she was very nieve and immature not to mention selfish. Couldn't wait to get it finished. If it wasn't for our reading group and wouldn't have finished it.
Our book club liked this book. It's a well written and researched book. She uses her words in a very colorful and descriptive way. We had a good discussion.
Very slow unbelievable not very well written book. Everyone in our book club agreed.
Very hard book to read. Very slow , lots of irrelevant content. Skipping back and forth. Although no one cared for the book we had a very good discussion in our reading group.
All members of our book club liked it. Of course it\\\'s sad but what war story isn\\\'t. It really portrayed the strength of women in the war and the hardships they had to overcome. Had a good discussion. Was also informative about the Resistance.
Interesting but slow. Good insight into the life of that era. Easy to read.
