My Reviews
Not a typical mystery. Interesting insights into norther Europe and some of the societal tensions there. I liked it because it addressed some difficult issues such as asylum seekers and being human. This prompted a good discussion.
Great read. Those of us who grew up in the South seemed to relate to the story more easily than others. Generated a lot of discussion about prejudice and ability to take action.
This book generated an excellent, lively discussion at our book club. It describes the life of a truly dysfunctional family. It made us look at the roles of parents and children through new lenses.
Only 1 person in our book club enjoyed this book. The rest of us didn't think the character development was done well at all. It jumps around too much without making its point. The ending and story of the grandmother could have been really interesting - but it wasn't developed. Many of us were becoming adults in the timeframe referenced by the book (1979-1980) and couldn't relate to how the book portrayed the times. Basically, we felt the author was living off of the success of her first book. We did manage to have a lively discussion but that's the best thing we could say for the book.
Great book - well written and interesting. Liked the interweaving of the past and present. Good discussion about how far would you go for someone you really cared about.
