My Reviews
All agreed that there was way too much detail in many areas of the book -- EX: thoughts swirling through her head as she anticipated spending her first night with Roman were waaaaay too much! "Valentine" was a bit 'over the top' in her self-analysis. On the positive side, descriptions during her trip to Italy made you want to be there...!
...a grim reminder of how easy it was to simply remove women who didn't fit the expectations of the time...do not think, do not attempt to be creative or use your imagination...
The book provoked discussion on several issues: 1) how the younger sister must have felt and 2) how parents who do this (and there are some) really feel about the child they've created specifically to be a donor. Very thought provoking...and disturbing at the same time.
I loved it; loved the letter-writing style of the book; it provided a piece of history re Guernsey of which I was unaware; very insightful regarding issues with which ordinary people had to contend during this period. However, not all of our group feel the same regarding the style (letters) -- some felt it was confusing to keep track of the characters...
Loved the interchange of years to become familiar with the entire history of the characters. We all agreed that we were surprised at the turn(s) of events throughout the story, and that it had a surprise ending!
Definitely not one of James Patterson's best. Fairly simplistic, and female character not very believeable. However, the ending was a good surprise!
The story of two dysfunctional adults, raising a soon-to-be dysfunctional child Interesting here and there, but definitely not a page-turner.
Our group liked the fact that it was written in different voices, and moved back and forth between the different perspectives of the main characters in the book -- and the fact that it provided so much information about wolves. I think we were all inspired to read/learn more about them....
Not my favorite Jodi Picoult book but definitely a good read!
Most of us are Kingsolver fans and, while this book was informative in a number of areas, it was not her best. Glad I read it, but it wasn't a "page turner'.
Found the book to be interesting/thought provoking re decisions that are definitively right or wrong; made one think about the positives/negatives of living in relative isolation.
This book was fabulous -- one of my all time favorites -- I didn't want it to end.
Interesting view of a mixed marriage and the trials of "mixed" children living in this country, as well as the struggles of a first generation Chinese male -- and the things that Mothers 'visit' on their daughters based on their own upbringing ... with the same result!! A very dysfunctional family.. Many times I considered just putting the book down, but felt comelled to see if they -- collectively and individually -- could break through the circumstances.they were dealt -- due to race and sex. It provided much fodder for discussion.
We are a group of 4 -- and none of us liked this book -- and only one found it interesting enough to finish -- to an unsatisfying end.
This is one of James Patterson's best. Over the years, some of books -- like those of some other mystery writers -- have become rather predictable. But ot this one! Kept all of us guessing until the very end!
Loved this expanse of this book, multilayered story, developed characters, touch of romance -- along with some serious intrigue and a touch of the paranormal. GREAT read!
I enjoyed this book -- particularly for women of "a certain age". Let's us know what might be possible as the years go by.
Although the book started out really slow, if you stick with it, it will grab you. Great characters, including the elephants. LOVED the twist at the end -- and didn't see it coming at all!
