Mameh struggles with the mores of her time and the unabashed interest of chicago society in her love affair with Wright. Her influence on the almost manic Wright is played out vividly in
Horan's novel and Horan's beautiful prose pulls at one's heartstrings as Mamah struggles with her desire to have a life with Frank and the guilt she feels in leaving her family and home. A good insight into the standard of treatment for infidelity at the time women were sruggling just for the right to vote.
Written beautufully by Diane Satterfield. A novel that twists and turns, making minor characters at last important. One of the treasures a reader doesn't want to end.
Using baseball as the base of the story Harbach shows the reader different characters who revolve around America's pastime and weave stories of found love, family dynamics and friendships at many levels. The reader is instructed in the art of baseball as well as wonderful characters who are different from the usual characters in an American novel. A really good read.
I think I have read too many books on Hemingway. It was written well but I felt Hemingway was portrayed too much as a hero. He had severe alcohol dependency and proved to be a philanderer.`
