I loved that these children overcame their childhoods to become successful people. It is true that parents control your childhood and how you are raised but you control yourself as an adult and how you chose to live. She did not use her parents or childhood as an excuse. Amazing how she never did - she did not describe them in a bad light - just the facts of how it was.

Such a fun, easy read. Loved the format after I got used to it - only written in letters. I thought it was informative to hear more info on life during those times. Looked up the recipe for potato peel pie - don't think we'll be trying that!
