My Reviews
Overall, our group really enjoyed the book. (Some guessed the ending right away and were sad there wasn't the usual dramatic twist at the end). Jodi really did her homework and gave great descriptions of what it's like to have Asperger's or live with someone who does. We discussed how we all need to be kinder to one another -- especially to those who are "different". Many felt badly for the "normal" brother, who was left to raise himself. Some parts were unrealistic (the mom turning her son in, having such an inexperienced lawyer, etc.) but the book moved along well and gave readers food-for-thought.
An easy breezy beach-chair read that kept my interest. The characters were layered and I liked the setting of the late 60s. The climax made me think, for whom would I shave off all MY hair for?
Engaging pre-civil war piece. The author keeps the reader intrigued by alternating the voice between two main characters (one a black slave and the other a white indentured servant). Themes of slavery, social status, survival, mental illness and family are explored.
The book made me think how a person can have many lives.....you just don't know their whole story. It made me realize how comfortable our loves can be and how we shouldn't take things (or people) for granted. Our club had a lively discussion on relationships -- between women, with men, between sisters and the ever-challenging mother-daughter bond.
We enjoyed the suspense....only a few guessed the killer before the end. Lots of twists and turns. Great debut!
