My Reviews
This has got to be one of the most tedious books I have ever read. You know it's not a good thing when you don't care about the characters by page 30. I just kept thinking the book would get better. While the last 20 pages or so held my interest, it was not worth the several hours I invested in reading this. I'd say skip this one and go to the next book on your list!!
This is really more like a series of short stories than a novel. Just when you start to understand and follow a character, they disappear, never to be heard from again. Overall, I liked the idea of the book and proceeding backward in chronological order to trace the history of the painting was quite different.
A fascinating look at the difference in classes in Indian society. It reminded me a little bit of The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I enjoyed the backstories of the main characters and was left wishing the author would have written another one or two chapters!!
I was totally fascinated by this book and couldn't put it down. It gave me a new perspective on WWII. I had no idea about some of the conditions related in the book.
What an amazing book. How much do any of us really know about life in North Korea? This book sheds insight on the extremely difficult conditions the people of North Korea are living under and profiles several brave individuals who escaped from the country. Some of the passages were very sad to read, especially those dealing with the famine. I learned a lot from this book, but not in a preachy way, as the book reads like fiction (but sadly it's a true story).
This book was a quick summer read. It told the story of a girl who was an indentured servant in the last 1700s in the South who is forced to live with a slave family. The author switches between two narrators -- one the indentured girl and one a slave. Very interesting to compare and contrast the views of both characters. Reminded me a little bit of The Help, with a dash of Gone with the Wind thrown in!
