My Reviews
The characters in this book were so well described that I felt that I really got to know them. The story was so different from any that I have read that the book was hard to put down.
I loved hearing the story of Henry and Clare through the traveling back and forth in time!! Something different from the average book that you pick up.
After reading Ms. Kidd's first novel, I was disapointed in this book. The characters just didn't have the depth that I had hoped for and I had a hard time finding much to discuss at my book club meeting.
This book was fantastic. The characters were so realistic and the story line was nonstop. It was so wonderful to read about lives that are so different from my everyday world.
This book was slow reading, with difficult language, until the last 100 pages. Then I couldn't put it down. All the time, I thought the couple had separated, their marriage just another casualty of the cruelness of their son's being. What a surprise at the end!! I can't say that this was my favorite book, but I recommend it as a book that is sure to provoke conversation.
This book I couldn't put down. I just can't imagine how normal an adulthood the author appears to have after growing up in such an eccentric family. Just goes to show that it "takes all kinds."
The concept of the book really intrigues me. However, I found the book very long and slow going. The story itself kind of got lost in the length of the book and at time it was work to read it.
This book was okay. I had just finished a couple of other books on the same topic so my enthusiasm was a little low on this one.
I did not like this book at all. The format was dull and I just could not finish it.
I love this book. I enjoyed the immersion into a period of history that I truly knew next to nothing about. I came away firmly believing that, although records do not exist, there truly was a woman pope. Why else the "chair" examination before annointing a new pope?
I loved this book. I knew nothing about the Guernsey islands before reading this. Historical fiction is my favorite way to learn about history and the characters in this book quickly invited me to be their friends!! I loved the letter format, feeling that I was a part of the World War II era.
Wow! I have to admit that I didn't know as much as I thought I did about life in the South of the 1960's. This book moved quickly and I didn't want to put it down! Minnie was my favorite character and one of the the strongest that I have come across.
Was this real? Starting with the author's name, I felt that this book was just an attempt to make money. Dull, repetitious, obviously not my favorite.
I liked this book and learned a lot about an early version of slavery in the US. Very interesting, but I do admit making a "family tree" at the beginning of the book to keep the characters straight. It was eye-opening to realize that the master had many
"relatives" in both the Big House and in the Quarters.
This book was painful for me. I was drawn to the summary and enjoyed Cleave's last novel, but this one is too much work. I have to admit that I called it quits with this one. Hopefully my book club does not choose this as a selection.
very long with many characters. I found myself taking notes to keep up with all of them. The last 100 pages were redeeming as the action moved to the climax. Wouldn't read this one a second time!
Wonderful story full of emotion!!!!
