My Reviews
I read this book a few months ago. It did have a couple of humorous moments and I could empathize with Alison in the beginning but as the novel progressed it became harder to identify with. I noticed that they are billing this book as appealing to fans of Price and Prejudice as well as The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing. Well, I loved P&P and thought The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing was very overrated. Honestly, this book has nothing in common with P&P. Don't expect too much and you shouldn't be disappointed.
The author did a great job creating a self-centered, shallow character (Jessie) for which I had absolutely no sympathy or empathy for. Couple that with some completely absurd and ridiculously bogus legends and plants and, well . . . you get the idea. I liked her first book, The Secret Life of Bees, though. I have to say that the whole idea of marrying yourself was also idiotic - what the author was trying to say could have been demonstrated in a much more plausible manner.
I found this book to be okay but not nearly as compelling as many other books I have read. Pages 150-300 really felt like I was slogging through it. Interesting but it really could have used some serious editing IMHO.
I found this book fascinating and especially liked that the it was told from the point of view of an austistic boy. Very original and I enjoyed reading it.
I did not like this book. The time travel was very haphazardly done and Clare basically does whatever Henry says. The genre is really a romance novel.
My book club read this last summer. We all enjoyed it. A little mystery, a little history, a wonderful narrator, and a great ending :-)
Honestly, not an award winning book but one that is a pleasure to read.
I read this book with my online book club and none of us felt it was scary. The writing was stilted and not very believable.
