My Reviews
I loved this book. It was poignant and sad, yet it had funny moments as well. A real eyeopener, too.
I really liked this book because it was different and kind of dark.
I enjoyed this book, even though it was rather sad. It shows how family members become isolated from each other because they don't communicate. For instance, if Rose had told her father about her ability to taste the feelings of the people who made the food she ate & he had told her about the special abilities he & his father had, she might not have felt so alone and they may have had a closer relationship. The book also made me think about how tastes and smells can stir up past memories and give you a feeling of nostalgia.
I loved this book. It has a gothic feel to it with its "ghost" and secrets and setting. It was sad, yet managed a happy ending for at least 1 character. Setterfield is a wonderful storyteller, and I totally agree with the last paragraph on the back flap of the book jacket. It even put into words some of the feelings I have when reading a book.
This was just your basic suspense story that wasn't really suspenseful because the whole book was very predictable. There were no real surprises; very formulaic.
I enjoyed this book. You hear so much more about the horrible things the Germans did to the Jews, that we forget about the horrible things done to the Chinese, Koreans, and Allied prisoners by the Japanese. This book helps bring that to light.
I had a liitle trouble getting into this book because of the language pattern of the 5yo narrator, which I don't feel was very accurate. Most 5yos I know speak more like adults than the child portrayed in this book. If his mother was the only person he talked to for the 1st 5 yrs of his life, he should have been speaking pretty much like her. The psychology of this book was what I found interesting, and I felt the author did a good job with that.
Enjoyable, easy read.
Very charming. Nice to read about a love story between to older people for a change.
I've never been able to name a favorite book before, but now this is it. I loved this book! I was drawn in from the 1st page. It is beautifully written and very imaginative. I didn't want to put it down, yet didn't want to get to the end. I wish there really was a circus like this one.
