My Reviews
great insight to the life of blacks and whites in the south using women born early 1960s
a predictable love story with glimpses of history that most of us do not know about, the japanses internment camps in the 40s
a nice story about how our past never goes away, and sometimes, good can come from evil
A graphic look at what goes on in third world countries and what happens when outsiders care.
I don't get why anyone would write about this woman's life. It was unexciting, uneventful and boring
Very insightful into early onset dementia and how a family can deal with something so awful and painful, not only for the person suffering from the disease itself.
Great story of blatent bigotry and the people who won't give in to it
great beach read, read 'dragon tattoo' first. not a great book club discussion book.
an insight into the different treatment of sons vs daughters
great history - ask a Catholic if this ever happened, your answer would be no. Ask a historian, your answer would be yes.
told from the perspective of a 5 year old, very well done.
excellent telling of a story by a special needs child with aspergers. high schoolers can read about and empathize with children who are special needs and do not think they same way they do.
interesting bit of 1920s history of writers but a bit dull and drags. fun to watch 'midnight in paris' after reading the book
reads like a history book. if you like reading historical accounts, you will like it
interesting premise, not realistic. could have ended with ....and they lived happily ever after.... didn't like that
clash of the have and have-nots. author takes no sides and gives no resolutions. thought provoking
works better as a 'law and order' episode rather than book club read
religious spiritual nonsense
Can't help but compare her struggle with that of Jeanette Walls in The Glass Castle. Pales in comparison to that story but otherwise, I liked the book. It's really quite inspiring what an individual can overcome and do for herself in less than adequate circumstances.
great book for a 14/15/16/17 year old, not for an adult book group, very easy reading, parents didn't have one friend!! not realistic
a heartwarming story of survival and beating the odds. can't help but compare it to 'the glass castle' which was far superior
poorly written, terrible grammar, unrealistic characters and events. This is a grown up book that refers to a vagina as 'down there'.... that being said, i kind of liked it, can't have quality literature without books like this, right?
I have no idea why this book would be on the best seller's list. Didn't learn anything, didn't really have any interest in boring characters. Would not recommend this.
one needs to check reality at the door to enjoy this poorly written book of cliches. I enjoyed the fantasy of it, in the same way I enjoyed the Twilight series
got about half way through, no interest in characters or what happens to them
ever get into a movie then someone tells you what happens next? Philip Roth starts with a preposterous premise and the story goes down hill from there. Near page 60, he tells you the two characters who are talking are dead soon. Really? they were the only likeable characters, I stopped reading after that.
wow, she really hated herself. it's a well written story about how she learned about herself and learned to like herself
This is the story of people who have major tragedies in their lives, whether its their doing or the circumstances and if and how people can deal with this and possibly even overcome them. You want these people to be able to find happiness.
An informative story about how the 'haves' and 'have-nots' live and the choices they make. The ending is just perfect, although maybe not what you will be expecting.
didn't know anything about what was happening in Hong Kong during WW2
after the first few chapters, the rest is totally predictable and obvious. dislike books like. that being said, there is quite of lot of discussion that can come from the circumstances
She should have left it forgotten....
