My Reviews
Overall everyone agreed it was very well written. We were captivated by the first few chapters of the book and became saddened with the regret of the memory keeper and enlightened by the redemption of the daughter.
Vivid, coloful, and eloquent are three words too sum up expressiveness of the author. She helps portray everyday life in a way that is mesmerizing.
Enjoyed discussing and comparing to movie. Due to the fashion aspect the movie was more enjoyable but the movie left out some very entertaining chapters about her sister. They both are recommended.
This was a very interesting memoir with stories so wild it's hard to belive they are true. It is a fine example of how the poverty chain can be broken through the compromises of ones selfishness and the power of knowledge.
Although the majority of our club would have never chosen this book to read we were glad to have the opportunity to do so. It was very well written and not only full of suspense but it also had an unusual way of causing the reader to sympathize with characters other than the Clutter family. Now we want to watch the movie "Capote" to see how this affected his life.
We voted to give this book 3.5 stars. ( I rounded up above)
Our book club has read seven books so far and this is the first book in which every member enjoyed this book. This was a truly inspiring and uplifting story with originality. What better for a bunch of women to read about than the coming together of woman to strengthen, enpower, and support one another.
Also the educational thread surrounding the bees throughout the story was very interesting, Excellent read!
We all could relate more to Lee's side of the story but enjoyed this inspirational story of hope and survival. The ending was somewhat abrupt and left you wanting to know more about the recovery, therapy, and the impact on the children, but overall was well-written and leaves you with a sense of gratitude of the things we take for granted in our everyday lives.
This was a hard book for most of us to read due to it's depressing postapocalyptic subject. However, once read it takes you to an inspirational, almost religous, place in which you become so grateful for what you have in this world you are thankful to have been placed in this setting.
Our book club enjoyed this book. The discussion was looked forward to by many to help understand the multi-layered multi-generational story. Many wanted to read it over to better understand the links. Definitely not a light read but an enjoyable one.
This was our favorite book club picks out in the past year. This author has a way of capturing your heart and mind.
It is highly recommended reading for everyone.
This is another great Jodi Picoult book. However, all of us agree that it is not as good as My Sister's Keeper. We did enjoy the glimpse of Amish life very interesting and engaging. It brought about a good discussion. It was a little long and drawn out but very well worth reading.
We had a mixed review on this one. About half of our group really liked it and some others could not finish. It is a different yet interesting story.
We always find a way to be attracted to books regarding mother and daughter relationship. This is another interesting topic on the subject. Some were frustrated with the mother's reservations and then others could relate to the topic.
This book is a very fast read for the holiday season. It's light-hearted, humorous, and very engaging plot can be easily related to during the fast paced, hurried, and "keeping up with the Jone's" portion of the Christmas holiday. We all enjoyed this take on what truly is important this time of year.
We all enjoyed this female-bonding story, It was immediately interesting and kept surprises throughout. We could all relate to in one way or another to the characters, especially in motherhood. Great Book!
We all enjoyed this unusual, yet exciting take on circus life in the early 1900's. The writer keeps your attention until the very end and gives a remarkable insight into the life of an elderly man. Very thought provoking and worthy of reading. Highly recommended.
The author takes you on a self-exploring journey to find herself in foreign travels abroad. However, it was hard to engage when limited information was given on the reason for the low point in her life which excelled her to explore her inner self. We wanted to know more about her ex-husband, her previous marriage and what led to the horrible divorce. There are numerous characters that are not defined and therefore made the reader unable to relate. Also, most of us could not relate to not wanting to be a mother. Very chatty and talky and we mainly wanted her to get to the point.
This book was an all around good girls book. With good character development it allows the reader to understand and gain respect for the women they become.
It was laugh out loud funny at times and equally touching and moving at others.
Although most us didn't finish the book the topic of this book provided a very interesting discussion. Divorce, religion, parenting, and drugs all provided the backbone of the conversations.
We felt that the author's article in the New York Times was sufficient in getting the overall story.
This book promoted very stimulating conversation for our book club. It is a must read for any book club out there. It came at a time in our lives when we
needed it most. Any mother or father can relate to the pain and suffering
endured and it actually makes you feel better at the end.
Whether reading this classic tale for the first time or for the tenth time, it always stimulates a thought provoking conversation.
This book brought up some good discussions although not highly rated overall.
Interesting yet depressing tale of alcoholism, spouse abuse, and child abuse from a woman's perspective yet a male author. It's hard to believe a man wrote it.
Excellent book club read. There was alot to talk about with this controversial
topic. It is creatively written with educational as well as some miraculous twists and turns that leave the reader wanting more answers. Definitely recommended by all!
Enjoyable read but not a favorite Nicholas Sparks story. Would have enjoyed more if we hadn't read the prologue.
Good discussion but not a favorite Jodi Picoult book.
Incorporates the wonderful non-conditional love of a four legged friend into a relatable story of everyday life.
Although the beginning is emotionally difficult to read as a mother, it is a historical fiction that is not only informative but also paints the picture of life in 1942.
This novel initiated a dramatic discussion with our book club. It encourages a reflection into your own self worth on this earth with an inspiration to change the world one person at a time.
Boring look at a shopaholics life in an unrealistic plot with a baby in tow.
This historical fiction keeps you on the edge of your seat and painfully waiting for answers with the main characters. Should be a must read for any high school or college student.
It's good versus evil with a strong, independent, "can do" woman who is in love with two men. It's hard to read just one.
