My Reviews
We all liked the book, even though we had to work hard to keep track of the huge “cast of characters.” This book includes a lot of psychological insights. We didn’t like all of the domestic violence but realized that it was characteristic of the place and time. Young Lila and Elena’s play with their dolls was representative of what they saw regularly.
Very interesting historical fiction showing the life of Beryl Markham. While I enjoyed the book, I thought it would have spent more time on the actual flight she made from Europe to America. We read Paris Wife and all agreed we preferred that to this book.
I found this a fun book to read. The idea of a floating library was interesting. I'm not too sure if I like the idea of someone not selling me a book because "I'm not ready to read a book like that" or "it wouldn't be for me." I enjoyed it, but found it hard to believe.
