The fully realized characters, the details of daily life in Depression-era America, and especially Gruen's handling of Jacob at two very different stages of life were compelling and a joy to read.
Don't forget the Author's Note at the back of the book. We spent quite a bit of time discussing the details brought to light by Gruen, and found that the most outrageous plot points were actually based on fact. The circus atmosphere of the book lent a bit of fun to the meeting, too, as we enjoyed homemade lemonade, popcorn, and animal crackers!
All in all, a well-researched look at circus life in the 1930's, and a great book to sink your teeth into.
