This was a very interesting book to discuss. Each member noted different parts of the story. The book was recommeded by a male friend who defined it as, "one of the greatest love stories ever written." That reference must be from a male viewpoint.
The authors writing style was very colorful and interesting. The book flowed from one chapter to another.
As a group we would recommend this book. One of the more interesting and controversial novels read yet.
On October 12, 2006 , we had the pleasure of having a special guest at our book club meeting, author Tom Bailey. It was fascinating to hear how he wrote this book and each of the character's developments in his head. Bailey described the process as, "the voices in his head." He actually said, "that the characters would talk to him."
In his short story book, Crow Man, he has the story where this novel came from. Originally, he snatched the idea for both from a news clipping.
I found the book lacking strong female characters. Of course the character of Gary Hazen was created to overshadow all the other characters with his strong beliefs of right and wrong.
The book is worth reading with a hot cup of cocoa. You will understand that comment after you read the last chapters of the book!
Enjoy!
The book is an easy read. Fairly simple plot line and lacking when it comes to any deep discussion material.
A wonderful novel for a book club discussion. Filled with interesting facts, it takes you into another world. Highlights the power and inner strength of women throughout the world, even under oppressive conditions.
A book on sisterhood and the bonds of friendship. I really liked this book. Excellent flow, easy, and interesting reading. Great for discussions.
Book is okay. Not a cliffhanger. To anyone associated with the law field, it is predictable in its outcome. It is not one of Grisham's best.
This writer is going to be hailed as one of the best of our modern times! A wonderful book with keen insight into the life of women in a repressive regime. I was so thankful to be born an American woman. Excellent for discussion, this book will live on in your heart forever!
I could not put this book down. I cried. No, I wept at the emotional ride that Khaled took us reader's on. It is beautifully written. It is a page turner. It is a powerful book on redemption and love! It is a gift to its readers! A must for book clubs!
A captivating look at getting old and life in the circus! An interesting mix. The novel jumps back and forth through memories. I got that, I wanted to stay in the past after awhile. Not thrilled with the ending, but over all a good read.
I chose this book for our club and greatly regretted it. It was juvenile in its plot and writing style. Lacked any kind of emotional attachment to the story line. Not sure why this book was rated so high?
Not sure what she discovered in her exploits? I was bored with this woman and her quest after the first few pages!
This is a well written, provocative book, on love, life, and choices.
Amazingly, I had never heard the story of Frank Lloyd Wright's love affair with Mrs. Cheney or the tragic ending of their affair.
This book is a well-written, well-researched, novel with the backdrop of the woman's movement in the early 1900's. The questions on: love, happiness, and life, are as pertinent today as back then!
A great novel for book club discussions. I would highly recommend the book.
Interesting to read of how times have changed for women. We have come a long way in so many ways. And...not so far in others.
Tom Bailey was at our book club for our discussion of his book. It takes some getting over the southern dialect and starts out slow, but gets better as you move along. I think this book would make a great movie!
This book is long and filled with details that men might like and women don't need. But, even so...it is a good read. Pointed out the futility of life in those days.
A grown woman having an affair with a teenage boy is not my idea of entertainment. The characters lacked character.
I really had an easy read with this one. The writer writes like she is talking to you. Our book club did extras like visiting falling waters, researching newspaper clippings on the couple and the murder, and watching the A&E story on Frank Lloyd Wright. Amazing to me that this was one of the most horrific murder/love stories and I knew nothing of it!
This one was a little too far fetched for even my imagination!
Tom was at our book club for this and I was told to, "be nice," by the other club members. I could not hide my dislike of this book. Just felt like it was a long book that could have been written in a few pages. Also there were no strong female characters.
The book was okay. Easy to read, but it seemed to be a story written around history dates.
This author was described as being like the author of the kite runner. Absolutely no comparison. This book was slow. Had some interesting medical facts and myths, but that was about it!
Good for discussions as is any controversial subject like the death penalty.
The author takes you on the ride of a lifetime! Excitement from beginning to end.
Thrilling ride thru the snow! This book keeps you guessing... even when you have it figured out the plot twist and turns one more time. I enjoyed the ride. Would not want to read during the first snowfall though!
