My Reviews
You feel that you are there, in the story, and you feel the pain of the racial segregation in the south at that time. The author weaves the tale well, with authenticity, and care. Her bias does come through, which is the same bias I have, which may have made the tale that much more engaging. I would recommend this to any fellow book reader.
I don't normally like reading letter format, since I always felt it was hard to be "in" the story, but this was the best I have ever read of the type. Engaging, great plot, and great descriptions helped to overcome the shortcomings in this type of storytelling. I highly recommend it.
Interesting as it is set in Nazi Germany and the main characters are Germans. It was hard to get into at first, because I was not keen on the Angel of Death narrating such a story...but once the story itself was begun, I couldnt put it down. It was one of the few books in a long time to elicit a strong emotional response at the end. I highly recommend it to book clubs, as there is alot alot alot to talk about regarding what happens.
The war was sad, the time in America was sad, but a good love story rises above. Wonderful read, highly recommend.
Glad I know now. Interesting story weaving, with some disappointment too (which is not always a bad thing). Would recommend if interested in that time in history.
The writing wasn't the best, and it could definitely been a longer, more involved story, but it was a good story nonetheless. Makes you think about something that many don't want to discuss, or acknowledge, because it happens halfway across the world. Good discussions can arise from the material.
This book is a page-turner, very engaging and you must know whats on the next page. But the author also leaves you no room to make your own conclusions (even though they probably would be the same as the author's) and outright tells you what she thinks about polygamy. On such a topic Im sure its hard to suspend judgment, but it did feel preachy at times. Still would highly recommend it.
The book weaved many different stories together, but was a tad too short.
