The Elegance of the Hedgehog

Our book club loved this selection. Some of the ladies found the passages on philosophy a little difficult to get through, but all emphasized that everything else was perfect! What we discussed the most was how 2 extremely reclisive & private people are brought together by another generous soul who recognized their worth. Beautiful writing with passages you will linger over.

The Known World

Fascinating treatment of a little known condition in the South before the Civil War: free blacks who owned slaves. It was a difficult book to read, not just because of the brutality but also because I kept waiting, in vain, for "good" people to do the right thing. The purity of spirit of some characters was the light that kept me moving through the text.

Tantalized by "The Tiger's Wife"

The beautiful lyrical writing caught me immediately but the three stories which weave around each other are the true fascination. The first story is that of the relationship between her grandfather and Natalia, the second is the deathless man and third is the Tiger's Wife. All three stories are connected through the grandfather and after his death, to answer her own questions, Natalia must figure out how and why. A marvelous blending oly talented writer.

Church of Christ without Christ

From Amazon; \\\"Wise Blood, Flannery O’Connor’s astonishing and haunting first novel, is a classic of twentieth-century literature. Focused on the story of Hazel Motes, a twenty-two-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate fate, this tale of redemption, retribution, false prophets, blindness, blindings, and wisdoms gives us one of the most riveting characters in twentieth-century American fiction.\\\"

Unconvincing, Slow
Lightweight

Written from the point of view of Catherine, this book found itself limited to only what she thought. The members of our book club who have history majors were troubled by what they saw as historical inaccuracies.

The book was a mesmerizing glimpse into life during WWII in Occupied France and in Germany. Beautifully written with exhaustive research.
