My Reviews
I felt the pacing was off, and it could have been copy edited down a bit. This topic and these people may have been better served in a non-fiction treatment. I recommend it to book clubs since the ladies in our book club liked the story and others might as well. I just didn't find it convincing.
Nostalgic read, bearing in mind the setting and time frame of this story. I can say honestly, I am encouraged enough by this book to go ahead and read the second in this series.
Sink your teeth into this story and stay with it until the end. It's worth it. Excellent for book discussions.
Nicely written. Fable-like tone. I enjoyed the read very much, but Book Clubs, be warned, it might be a divisive read. Having said that, good choice for book clubs.
This story was a piece of marzipan. Beautiful, yet small (not a voluminous tome) on the outside, yet complex, sublime, layered with flavor and completely satisfying on the inside. I noted "Insightful" twice in my word selection to describe, "Rules of CIvility". There were several passages as well as single sentences that were remarkable simply because of the images or feelings they represented to the reader (me!). Towles is nothing if not pithy when conveying a large idea. Technically, the text was tight and the editing spot on. Perhaps I wished for a different conclusion, but that's what happens after you eat a confection. One always wants a little more.
It wasn't that I disliked the book. As a group we certainly had an interesting discussion regarding character motivation, but I personally wasn't satisfied with how the character conflicts were resolved. Having said that, it was a nice piece of writing and I might consider reading more of Ms. Hadley's work, but this book was a bit confusing and, as I've said, left me unsatisfied.
I only recommend this book so you're not left out of all the hoopla. More of a Twilight with explicit sex: a sophomoric read. That said, if you're looking for more titles like this one, there is far better erotica fiction available.
A must-read for book clubs. This novel will really get your club members talking. "Still Alice" is a great read, given the subject matter. Kudos to Genova's editor. The story was concise and to the point. While there were one or two loose ends we as a club weren't sure about, the story's impact was tangible. Genova says so much in a relatively short novel, you feel immensely satisfied with the reading experience itself, even if you feel completely anxious during the reading! "Still Alice" is great piece of writing and you are pulled right in to what Alice herself is experiencing. And honestly, with books like "Still Alice" out there, why bother with Fifty Shades of Grey?
Lots of things to talk about with this one. Made for an interesting and lively discussion.
Realistic and much to discuss with this one.
