My Reviews
This book is just sad. I can't say I didn't like it, because it was well written and garnered a lot of good discussion (and it was an easy read), but it was depressing for sure. I would recommend for a book club, but not for pleasure reading.
I really liked the idea of this book. I'm big into cold cases, though, so this was a page turner for me. I really wanted to find out what happened! I'd classify this as a light read, with some humour in the writing. Our discussion of this book centered mostly on character development.
This book was extremely interesting. The only negative of this book is that Chabon's writing is sometimes hard to follow. He jam-packs his sentences with wit and description, and sometimes I miss what's going on or I miss the humour he injects. I'm almost tempted to read the book again to fully appreciate the writing (in addition to enjoying the story). The concept of the story is great, too. I'd recommend.
Provoked some interesting discussion on how different people handle difficult circumstances.
I love love loved this book up until the ending. It was so brilliantly written and developed, and was so interesting with historical setting, but I felt like the ending was a little bit of a cop-out. Like...Carr just didn't feel like thinking anymore. I would still strongly recommend the book, but couldn't give it 5 stars for that reason.
