My Reviews
I throughly enjoyed this book. I didn't think I would like the storyline but after starting the book I could not put it down. This was a timely book with what is going on in schools across this country. I believe it would make a great discussion book and I intend to suggest it for our next months book. I also liked the way that Lionel Shriver writes. She is a fantastic story teller and the letter form to her husband made me feel close to the mother. I started this book one evening and finished it the next. I will definately read anything written by Ms. Shriver. Thanks for the insight.
Our book club read this book for the month of February, and we discussed it last night. Very mixed emotions and some only read two chapters and did not finish it because of its content. It was a great discussion, some really liked the book and some hated it. I would recommend this for book club as many books we have read have had limited discussion and this one was great.
The book itself was an easy read, very entertaining and overall the subject, promises to God, made for a great discussion. Although, I think her promiscuity was over the top. If she truly believed she had murdered the young man in the book, be it that he was truly scum, her life was disfunctional and would always be until she addressed her past. When Sweet pop came to her door was really a blessing in disguise, it gave her the chance to address the demons of her past. Overall I think our group enjoyed an easy read, especially a light one over the holidays. (We also read Finding Noel) If a group is looking for something fun and quick this is a good choice. We also enjoyed the discussion questions in the back.
This book never developed the characters, I sometimes got confused as to who was who because they were all so boring. If ever there was a book to read before bedtime, this would be it. This one will definately put you to sleep.
Our book club read this book and also watched Al Gore's Documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth" to get both sides of the issue of global warming. Most everyone enjoyed the book and it lent itself to a heated discussion. Politics and the media were credited with most of the blame for what is truth or not, although no one said they believed 100% whether which side was correct. This book is a great book for the times in which we live to hopefully help people to make an effort to, as one of our members said "use less stuff". Our book club enjoyed this book and had a great discussion.
Our book club enjoyed Water for Elephants: A Novel. It was not our favorite book of all time but it was a lite summer read which was interesting and easy to follow. The author did a good job researching the subject matter which made the book believable. Except for the ending which was definately written for hollywood. We would recommend this book for any bookclub. It was a great discussion book.
Our group throughly enjoyed this book. Many had never read Charlotte's work, all enjoyed her writing. The best comment of the night was "underneath her pinafore she was sure she had on a thong". Great classic if your club has not read one.
Our bookclub was mixed. The subject matter bothered a few. Many thought the book followed a long The Kite Runner a little too much. Would be nice if it had a discussion on line or in the back of the book. Overall it was an interesting read.
Our group throughly enjoyed this book. It gave a wonderful insight into the war. Truly no one was a winner in this war. But after reading this book one could truly understand how this particular battle was the deciding factor in the outcome of the war. Our discussion was great, and we all enjoyed the way Mr. Shaara wrote.
I believe all in our bookclub had read this book approximately 20 years ago. We still liked the ending the best and enjoyed the writing of Sidney Sheldon. This was a nice book to re-read and all enjoyed it. For those book clubs who have not read this book it is a great old book, well written and a twist ending. Great read.
Our club was divided as to who liked or disliked the book, but all had an opinion. When some of our discussions seem to faulter this one continued for the better part of the evening. Those who loved the book, truly loved the writing of Elizabeth Gilbert, enjoying her travels. Others not so much. But her life raised many questions between the members of our club. If your group is looking for a great discussion book, this is a great choice.
This was the second time that we chose this book for our club. It was the first book we read and we enjoyed it so much we decided to read it again. Everyone enjoyed the light read and the twist ending.
Light read, but fun. We each did a list, did not put our names on them and had to guess whose list was whose. Made for a fun evening.
Our club did enjoy this book for the most part. Only two people did not like the book. It was a very good discussion as everyone had an opinion.
We so enjoyed rereading this classic. It should be read by all high school kids today. What a lesson Harper Lee teaches in the storyline. All but one of our bookclub had read this book, many of us years ago, but it was a wonderful discussion. I would highly recommend it to all bookclubs of any age.
Everyone in our bookclub loved this book, but me. Everyone loved the way it was written and thought that Somerset did an excellant job. This discussion of Larry's life was quite in deep. It is a great book for a lenghtly discussion
Our group read the first half of Exodus so I will wait to review it after our next meeting and our members finish the book. We discussed it last night. Although I loved the way this book is written and I loved the story, as did many in our group, it is not a great book for discussion as the subject matter is a little deep.
This was a good discussion book as our group loved the characters. Especially the Grandpa and the grandson. Some had a problem with Miss Love, but without her the book would have been a little lifeless. All in all we enjoyed this book.
Yes the subject matter was difficult for many but was a great discussion. You either loved it or hated it. All said it was definately a page turner.
This was hard subject matter but all out book club enjoyed the book. It was nicely written and a great discussion.
Everyone totally enjoyed this book.
OK it is not a literary masterpiece but if you want a book that your book club will throughly enjoy and bring back many childhood memories this is the book. Everyone picked out their favorite part and shared a childhood memory. Fun was had by all.
This was such a great book. Our whole club enjoyed everything about this book. This was one of the best discussions ever. The characters were so wonderful and the story was page turning. Everyones only complaint was this was a two box of kleenex book. The heartwarming story of the Bommarito family draws you in the takes you on a wonderful journey of laughter, tears and learning to love under terrible circumstances. This is a great bookclub choice. I hope you take the time, you won't be disappointed when you get to know "Henry's Sisters".
Our bookclub really enjoyed this book. All agreed that it started slow. The characters were very believable but somewhat bothersome. It was a great discussion.
