My Reviews
Quick read! Reminded me of Angels and Demons a bit. Could definately stir up good conversation. Author does a real good job of creating "deep" characters with all kinds of issues.
So many characters, but easy to read. After Sarah's husband dies she takes in many different people into her home. She learns from them and they learn from her. Inspiring to know that life does go on and that you are never to old to change.
This book reminds us that in the 60's battered women had no place to turn. The book is about a girl called Bird who goes through life with alcoholic parents who beat her and her sister. When her father dies her mother moves them to Florida where Bird meets Miss Zora - her savior, in my opinion.
After reading the book I learned more about the author Connie May Fowler and found that this was more or less autobiographical. An amazing story that will make you cry and angry.
I honestly wouldn't have selected this book on my own. But it was enthralling and educational. This book is written from the eyes of a young girl taken from her tribe in Africa and sold into slavery. It's her entire life story. She is amazing and inspiring. The idea of slavery has always angered me. How could people have done this? These people were treated horribly - worse than animals. Read it - you won't be disappointed!
Cute and easy read. Fun. I really enjoyed it and would recommend. Kinda chic lit.
Everyone who read this was so enamoured by this book. So I had high expectations. I did enjoy the book but wasn't as excited about it as others that read it.
Our book club really liked the book. We had some really good discussion. Very interesting view points when you start discussing racism.
This book was fabulous! I really had to read it slowly and I kept having to go back and re-read sections just to keep the story straight. So many twists and turns! I really loved it!!
Very insightful. Not everyone understands the life of not being heterosexual. Not a life anyone would choose, at least I wouldn't. I feel for them.
Good book. Insightful in that it taught me about how in Saudi women are treated. Took too long to figure out "who did it". I had it figured out way before the end.
Not a bad book but not juicy enough to stimulate conversation. It was an easy quick read.
Really a good book. I didn't realize that in the 1940's how segregated we still were... that wasn't that long ago. I really hated the grandpa! Everyone was glad when he died - sad but true.
Good story. Easy read. Inspiring. I would recommend to my book club.
Our book club really liked it. Messed up family. Very sad. Very well written and easy read!
Romantic and silly but fun read.
I really liked this book. Very quick read! Maybe a good book for book clubs. What if you found your mother's diary?? What would you do? Twist at the end.
I read this book with my son who had to read it for 6th grade English. Such a sad story made me cry. I did enjoy it and would recommend to others. Easy read.
We all loved this book. CeeCee and her aunt were darling and we wanted it to be longer. Nice change from all the really sad books that are out there. Finally, a child who loses a mother gets a really good person in her life and lives a very nice life.
I did like this book. BUT.... these folks just live through one tragedy after another and in my opinion never find any happiness. It was good, but the end was less than fullfulling.
Woman's husband dies and it's supposed to be about how she would spend the next year doing fun things for herself but she's too much in mourning. I thought it was boring.
Not necessarily good book club discussion but I needed a light read.
I really enjoyed this book. Definately written at a middle school level but enjoyable for all. Very graphic as children fight to the death.
This was a fabulous book! I couldn't put it down. Very well written! Hard to keep track of who's who but also good because it's a mystery. I kept track on paper so I could refer to notes when I was a bit lost.
I still liked it but it was a bit slow. Was a bit confusing. In the end you find out some things that I think you were supposed to have had clues for but I didn't seem to catch on to them. Looking forward to reading Mockingjay.
It was boring and slow.
Very cute. Fun, fast read. I did't think our book club would have a lot to talk about but we had "great" conversations! I would like to read the next one of her books "Something Blue" because it's from the point of view of the "selfish" one in this book
I read it at the recommendation of several of my fellow book club members. It was just ok. So much detail on landscape a bit much for me. Really wanted the book to end with the main character doing more time travel.
I enjoyed the book. Insightful in that I didn't realize Hungary's took part in the jewish holocaust. I also didn't realize they had work camps. Long, long, long read!
Really just a fun read. Good for the beach. Fast read - short book. Cute concept - winning a bet by dating 3 girls who are all roommates without each of them finding out.
stupid ending. I have decided I don't like Oprah picks. They are so sad and depressing and this one had a stupid ending. If I am going to read about the life of someone I would at least like to see happiness and triumph in the end. This ending could have been written so much better.
OMG. I finally finished this long and laborious book. Honestly, it's a good story but way too long!!! And very confusing!
Loved the story. Didn't quite get why they had to throw in the - is that kid my father part. But overall a good story.
Very much like Hunger Games. I truly enjoyed it. Easy read and will be reading the second book in the series.
Enjoyed the read but a little slow.
I enjoyed the read and would recommend. It's been a while since I read it but couldn't put it down when I did.
I like these James Patterson Women's Murder club books. They are entertaining and easy reads.
I loved this book! Written very well and easy to read. A good historical fiction for kids. Very informative and adventurous.
I enjoyed it. It set back in history 20's 30's. Many, many brothels existed back in the day but this story about a "very" young girl and how she went from a child, to homeless, to a brothel, etc. is a good story.
I guess I was expecting the next Harry Potter. It wasn't awful just not great! It was far too long and way to many characters to keep track of for me. Once I got to about the middle of the book I did start to enjoy it.
The whole "vacant seat" was a strange and pointless storyline for me. But some of the characters were definately readable.
So I would recommend it to book clubs only because there would be so much to discuss. This was a hard book to read. I had a list of at least 25 words that I had to look up just to make sense of what I was reading. Written so long ago and in the Queen's english that it was hard to make sense of sometimes. Very depressing! It is supposedly the first of it's kind, in that it is the first book written about a woman wanting to make decisions of her own and to live her own life. Feminism at it's youngest!
Very good read! Could have been a little shorter. Too much time spent on getting to the Amazon and then not enough time spent on describing the Amazon and it's environment and the tribes. But awesome topic! Finding a tribe where the women stay furtile til very late in life. Many surprises!!!!
So I would recommend this book to book clubs only because there is so much to discuss. I know that there is a ton of symbolism but honestly I think I've decided I'm just not much of a "classics" reader. I think they are hard to understand and follow. This was very depressing to me and I did not enjoy reading it.
I didn't particularly care for this one. My book club picked it and those who read it said they really enjoyed it. It was just Ok for me.
This is one of my favorite books of all time!!
