My Reviews
Average response from our book club. Some really liked the book, others did not. I was right in the middle. We got great commentary from the discussion questions.
This authors writing style was different and I did need to go back to the beginning of the chapter to see who was "talking". However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a pleasurable and easy read. The footbinding stuck in my mind for weeks, though. Still not sure I'm over it.
The author did a great job of describing what it was like to be ninety or ninety three. I really liked this book.
The subject matter made this book a very emotional read. Sad at times but I found it hard to put the book down for very long. I liked this book.
I enjoyed this book for the most part, but it wasn't what I would call a "page turner". I had difficulty embracing the after life beliefs.
The author did a great job bringing all the characters to life. I loved the characters Grace and March. I liked Marmee better through March's eyes.
Our book group like this book, but just didn't understand why this family would chose to live in such an environment.
This was an enjoyable book even though the Lavinia character irritated me.
A lot going on this in this novel and it is interesting how it unfolds. I liked the contradiction - modernization vs. tradition, especially in Nayir - turns away from a woman's exposed face but owns a cell phone ?? I did struggle with the treatment of Muslim women.
The book didn't come as any surprise to me. Hasn't this always been a problem? Greater minds than mine haven't had an answer. What is the solution?
It was hard to keep the characters straight. I would rather read this as two separate books. I struggled with the subject matter. What people do in the name of religion!
