The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington

Informative, Dramatic
The story of the rise and fall of an old-wealth family in a "midland city" based on Indianapolis. Takes place on the dawn of heavy industry in the midwest (along with industrial pollution), and birth

This was my pick for bookclub. I had read an article about the author, Indianapolis native, Booth Tarkington, who is honored in a painting in our new Central Library. I've lived in Indy for 18 years, and realized that I didn't know much about Mr. Tarkington, although there are landmarks, neighborhoods, and events in Indy that are named for him or his work. Our bookclub enjoyed the book overall. Some had difficulty with the language and style at first (written in 1918), but that just takes a bit of getting used-to...It is interesting to compare and contrast the socio-economic changes that occur during the story, with our current economic situation. The character study is interesting, also. George Minifer is a character one loves to hate, although he begins to redeem himself at the end of the story. He reminds me of the celebutantes of today who have the attitude that it is better to "be someone" than to do something of value with your life. The book was a Pulitzer prize winner, and is included in the "Modern Library's List of 100 Best Novels." I recommend this story for those who enjoy historical novels.

Inspiring, Optimistic, Beautiful
Cute kid, but the book was not very convincing or very well written.

Many of the incidents that were described as "amazing" or "astounding" could have ordinary explanations. Also, I found it interesting that the sketch of Jesus looks kind of like Kenny Loggins. I'm not saying the child made anything up. He obviously had some kind of near-death experience, as do many people. I'm just not convinced that he experienced "heaven", but more likely his own version of what heaven must seem like to a Pastor's young child.
