My Reviews
Our discussion for this book was great. Many views and opinions and personal stories about the plight of the "help" in the lives of our members. One of our best discussions.
Rachel Keener called us during our book discussion and we were able to ask her questions about the book: the darkness of her stories/characters, the symbolism and the types of people she portrayed in her book. Appalachian, mater migrants, a bitter, overbearing family patriarch and the affects he had on his wife, Mamma Rutha and his granddaughter Mercy. Family secrets and mountain ways.
Our club had a very enjoyable discussion of this book. All liked the book, Henry and Sheldon were favorite characters and the contrasts between groups within the story were discussed in detail. Many liked the historical back and forth of chapters and the author's way of describing people and events and cultural differences. Some feel that there should be a sequel to this book, because the ending left the future of Henry and Keiko open. Very satisfying book club book.
