My Reviews
All the women are different, yet become friends within their book club. Serving refreshments and having a theme to each meeting is something we practice in one of my own book clubs. I laughed along with these very funny women. I sobbed along with the sadness that entered into their group, as well.
Being raised by unconventional, irresponsible parents is not an entirely horrible thing. The parents loved their children, but just couldn't get past their own dreams and addictions. Did the children suffer for this? YES. Did the children gain insight and understanding they could take with them into adulthood? YES, again.
As unfortunate as their childhood may have been, there was also fun, silliness and freedom that some people never get to experience.
Two young Chinese girls, from diverse financial backgrounds, learn and grow together. Foot-binding is explained as the young girls must bear that horrific, painful ritual. Strong bonds are formed as these girls become women and grow to have families of their own. Friendships change, secrets are kept, feelings are hurt, truth is uncovered....I sobbed uncontrollably while reading this.
"Half a Life" tells the confusion and guilt associated with causing someone's death. Strauss expertly reveals his personal story and how his life and personality have been affected. Especially touching are his private thoughts and his own inability to forgive himself. Strauss allows us to understand the effect of such a tragedy on a young man's psyche.
