The Thirteenth Tale

A wonderful read! Our entire book club loved it!

The Corrections: A Novel by Jonathan Franzen

Dark, Gloomy, Difficult
Would not recommend . . .

I found this book long, poorly organized and depressing. A basic complaint would be there are no "chapters" and just goes on and on and on. A complaint about the content would be that the characters are cruel, the father's illness is disturbing and depressing. Not my cup of tea.

Let the Great World Spin

I was really looking forward to reading this with all the hype attached to the reviews all through the front of this book. On and on about great story, great writing and so on. Well, I found it predictable and uninteresting. I figured out the connection between all these characters in like the first 20 pages. I also expected a few extra "tricks up the sleeve" in connecting the characters and even thought of one that would really have been a great twist. I kept hoping it would hook me, but it really never did.

I really liked this book. I had read "Glass Castle" and it was very interesting to learn about Jeannette's grandmother's life. I would recommend this to friends, although I think I would tell them to read the "Glass Castle" first.

Murder at Five Finger Light

I read this outside of my book club because I love mysteries and we hadn't read one in a while. I tried a new author, and while I enjoyed this book, it really is not a book club book, if you know what I mean. I would read another of her books.

Its hard to rate this book. I said I liked it, but in truth I'm not sure what I liked. It read well and was written well so that I wanted to keep reading, but the characters' relationship I thought was horrible and destructive. I didn't like the ending. I kept waiting for the one character to be put in her place, but it never quite happened. Others at our club did like it. Let's just say I didn't hate it.

Wonderful! This book was enjoyed by our entire book club. So well written it interested you as soon as you started reading it. The story was spun perfectly. The only complaint by some of us was at a certain part of the book, you really had to "think" about who was who as it jumps from one time period to another. But we all agreed it didn't take away from the book and in fact the jumping through time to tell the story was part of the reason it was so great! Enjoy a great read!

Slow, Unconvincing, Interesting
Three Weismans

This book had such potential but the characters were not fully developed. The author could have done so much more with the mother. And the daughters were never really "connected". I just kept thinking of what more could have been written to make it more interesting.
