My Reviews
I thought this was a great premise. Loved that the main character also loves books. However, the start was slow. THis one had mixed reviews by our members.
I thought the character development of this book was good. I was creeped out by how young the girl characters are when they are married off...and having sex...but I know that is a product of the times not of her writing. LONG book but good story!

The real theme in this book is of regret and how to let go of it to allow in the simplest beauty and love.
I adored this book!
There is a lot of discussion of scientific studies. And ultimately the conclusion is that people are not good predictors of their own futures. I found myself chuckling regularly at the authors use of humor. If you've read other similar books you know how much you appreciate the occasional joke to alleviate the dryness of the material.
This books is decent. It kept me sufficienty interested the day I read it. But I was very glad when it ended. I found it interesting at times but rambling at others. My book club would be depressed and the discussion would be limited as I view this.
I also found that Didion had an unrealistic view of the life of the average person. Her fame, money, name dropping, etc. got on my nerves after a while. Am I seriously supposed to invest in the death of this man when I don't take the main character seriously? Her diatribe on self-pity never resolves itself. Instead she remains a very self-pitying character in her own mind.
Our group had a really good discussion about the family and food aspects of this book. Many in our club said that this was a book they never would have picked so they were glad we had read it. We enjoyed this.
If you like Phillipa Gregory or other historical fiction, you'll enjoy this as well. The start is a bit slow but you are drawn to the main character, Mona Lisa.
ENJOY!!
OUr entire group hated this book! Most didn't even finish. I finished but could have cared less about the outcome.
This book was fun and Sedaris' family and friends are fun. He on the other hand gets annoying after a while.
When my friend picked this book I thought "I may not read this month's book" but I am so glad I did. I could not put it down. I thought about it all the time and talked about it constantly with innocent bystanders. Completely engaging and written beautifully!
