My Reviews
This classic book was re-printed in 2008 but is currently unavailable on Kindle. The story is of a young girl who makes her own future after being raised by her good-intentioned but unassertive uncle, miserly aunt and opportunistic cousin. It packaged insight into Charleston's role in the revolutionary war into a charming story of gumption and hope. It shows Tories and Revolutionaries as family and neighbors and each side including individuals of varying degrees of character.
The characters and environment were interesting, and it encouraged me to read other books in the Armand Gamache series.
Learned about life in Stalinist Russia. Liked this book better than Firefly Lane. Continues with the theme of people holding on to issues to the extent of affecting their current experience in a negative way; but at least these seemed to be making progress throughout the book.
The book presented a very believable family dealing with an interesting after-effect of a brain injury. The book was a cautionary tale of leading a too frenzied life and also a hopeful tale of blessings and improvements coming out of seeming tragedies.
Learned about how medical advances are made. Surprisingly readable and interesting.
I liked that there were 50 authors of very well known books and each had a section of 4 to 6 pages. Almost all were very interesting, but I would have enjoyed a few positive ones. Most of the authors came across as dramatic and pretty selfish. There was an interesting shift in tone between the write ups for the deceased authors and those that are still living. (The authors are discussed chronologically by their book publication date.)
We were split; half of the group enjoyed the book and the other half didn't. Those who enjoyed it thought it was adventurous and informative. Those who didn't enjoy it thought it was unconvincing and mis-informative.
Well written and enjoyable to read.
