The narrator/heroine is a strong and good voice, her struggles with her faith familiar. The premise that an 'insignificant' American lady ended up at one of the events that has had/still has an impact on our world today is a rewarding topic.
Our group members on the whole found the novel hard to get into, but oh, my, once you did, it was awesome!
A collection of essays published over a number of years covering aspects of marriage, child rearing, women's liberation.
E.B is probably not someone under 40 will choose to read, but in this compilation and others, she expresses some 'universal truths' with wit and aplomb.
The group discussion raised topics such as: How can one forgive such atrocities?, I now understand more of why the US had to use the atomic bomb, was this kind of survival in the man's genes?, wonderful brother Pete, we don't even want to talk about "The Bird', the author is a great researcher, but the quality of the writing does not match it.
At one time, it seemed like wherever you went, or whatever books were discussed, John Irving's work was always there. Is he current? Probably not. Does his work stand the test of time? Good question of which we were not sure. A Prayer for Owen Meany? The group was very divided. Long-winded, fascinating, confusing narrative, too much preaching to the choir, laugh out loud funny...
