My Reviews
This in the first of the Brother Cadfael series - a short mystery set in a medieval Welsh village. It is considered a classic in the genre.
Great timing to read this memoir of Hemingway's beginnings as a writer in Paris in the 20s. Our reading was enhanced by seeing Woody Allen's movie, Midnight in Paris, and several club members also read The Paris Wife, a fictionalized account of the same time period from the perspective of Hemingway's first wife, Hadley. Beautifully written (Hemingway truly was a great writer!). Transports the reader to another time and place - one that is now gone. Highly recommend! Group discussion was exciting and multifaceted!
I think our whole group enjoyed this one! "It was a dark and stormy night" is a good way to begin describing this novel. Comparison to Jane Eyre and Rebecca come to mind as well. It is a multilayered, inter-generational tale, ultimately about family but full of all that good stuff like maddness, an old castle, mysteries, revelations, murder, love, thunderstorms and more! Beautifully written. Long, but well worth the time!
Learned so much, yet fictionalized private interactions allow us to image what happened behind the facts.
This book appears to be a pleasant, easy read, but there are many deeper themes including aging, mental illness, disappointment, reinvention, the trappings of intellectualism, etc. The more we discussed it, the more we uncovered. Beautiful writing.
Although Gladys Deacon Spencer Churchill was the framework, but not the main character, of this novel, our book club members were most interested in her and glad we now know much more about her. This was a fun book to read and the character development was very good.
A beautiful piece of story-telling. The characters are fully drawn and the subjects addressed are thought-provoking. Highly recommend!
