My Reviews
This was a great book. The author has a narrative style that makes the book move along at a good pace, even with lots of information included. I didn't know much about Garfield or the era, and felt like I learned so much. You come away feeling like you knew and admired James Garfield. I also now want to know more about Alexander Graham Bell, and other events of that era. A terrific read.
It should be stated that this book is written for young adult readers. It is fun and an easy read, but not realistic. It reminded me of an older book, "Flowers for Algernon" which was much better. It had an interesting premise, but was predictable, and the characters were pretty one dimensional.
This book is very well written. The description allows the reader to easily visualize the landscape of the island. I enjoyed the history that the author brought out about this time period. While this is an insightful book which causes you to think about people who are isolated in one way or another, it is not a optimistic story. Don't read this if you are in anyway depressed.
This is a lovely Christmas read without being too typically sweet. Hallmark should buy the rights for a TV movie. Short and heartwarming.
