My Reviews
Good pick for a light read. Creatively written as the book is in the form of letters written between characters. Enjoyed some of the witty remarks demonstrated by main character.
Loved this book - I couldn't put it down! Well-written!
Very cute book and well-written. It was fun to read and an enjoyable story. The plot reminds me a little of Pollyanna.
I was surprised at all the many negative reviews. It was hard for me to put the book down. I liked the writing style of theauthor - he was very descriptive and told the story very well. It was dramatic with some twists and turns in the plot.
This book is reminiscent of When Harry Met Sally, yet different. I liked the format of the book as it covered the same calendar date over the span of 20 years, and I enjoyed reading how the characters transitioned into different stages of life. My biggest complaint was how long the chapters were - it made it hard to find stopping points sometimes and sometimes the plot seemed a little slow. I was also disappointed by the way some of the events of the story unfolded.
I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy, fun, and heartwarming book.
Loved this book! Well-written and very interesting the way the author told the story from three different perspectives. Couldn't put it down!
This is a fantastic and brilliantly written book. I finished it in just a few days. A unique plot written from the eyes of a five year old. A work of modern art in written form. Outstanding and pulls at my heartstrings as a running theme is the bond between a mother and child.
Enjoyed the suspense aspect of the story - it was hard for me to put it down because I was eager to find out what happens next. It is a fast-paced book which I liked - there were no slow parts. The story is about a mother and child which always pulls at my heartstrings being a mother myself.
Quick read. Very thought provoking about being in between real life and "beyond." and how the main character reflects on her life and whether she should "stay." Easy to read and hard to put down once I started. Some of the "flashbacks" were a little dull compared to what was going on in present time and debating what she should do.
Well-written story that reminds me of a modern day Christmas Carol. A man comes across his own obituary and it causes him to reflect on many of the relationships in his life, especially those people he did not treat well and he tries to make amends. Very heartwarming and touching, especially towards the end of the book.
Loved this book! Found it very interesting and amazed that it is nonfiction. Live in the Chicago area so especially appreciated learning more about Chicago's history. It was slow for me at first just because there were a lot of characters and facts, but then I couldn't put it down!
I was expecting more since this book seems to be popular and the description talks about not telling others about what happens because the magic is in "how the story unfolds." The subject matter on a societal level was interesting and something I didn't know much about, but the story itself seemed a little depressing and sometimes a little confusing. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
Great book. Very interesting and complex plot with lots of characters. The book was perhaps 100 pages too long for me, but I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the sequels.
Interesting story that covers the friendship of 2 girls over the course of 30 or so years. A light read, yet seemed slow and redundant at some parts. I enjoyed reading it and especially like the writing style of Kristin Hannah.
This is one of the best books I've read in a while! The first 100 pages are a little sad/gloomy, but keep on reading because it gets difficult to put down as more of the story unfolds. Beautifully written and I plan to read more of Kristin Hannah's books after enjoying this one so much.
Wonderful book! Book is touching on so many levels and depicts Nazi-era events through the life of a young girl and narrated by Death (which I found interesting and unique). I finished this 550 page book in just a few days! Definitely sad at times, but there are other points in the book that are heart-warming and optimistic.
I struggled to get through this book. I found the plot to have little substance and I found the main character to be exhausting to read about. It seemed to go nowhere. :-(
Loved reading this book. Definitely touched me on many different emotional levels. The book unfolds in a few different ways which kept me continuously interested in the story. Portrays the characters in such a way that I felt like I really knew them and at times what they were experiencing.
Excellent book! Very interesting!
Beautifully written book - I like the way the author described what was going on. Had a vivid image in my head. But it was a slow read for me. It took me a while to get through it.
Loved the way this book was written. Plot seems very basic at beginning, but as the story goes on, more and more layers are peeled away which made it hard for me to put the book down!
Very cute book!
Wonderfully written book. Writes about an aspect of Asian culture in the 1800's I didn't know much about. The subject matter could definitely lead to interesting discussion!
Loved it!
In the end, I liked the book, but I felt like the first 2/3 of the book really dragged and it wasn't until the final third when I felt like I really got sucked in and all the loose ends were put together. It was beautifully written and a very intricate story, yet at times I felt confused by all the characters and subplots. If you read it and find it a little slow at times, stick with it until the end (the end was worth it)!
Was very disappointed by this book. Could make a potentially cute Hallmark holiday movie as there were some parts that were humorous, but overall I thought it lacked plot and it did not keep my interest. The story could be described as a 1960's version of A Christmas Story (but nowhere near as good and it only seemed like a very small portion of the story had anything to do with Christmas). :-(
A quick (and fun) read that makes you think about how a person can evolve and change over the course of time. Could lead to a fun and interesting club discussion!
Loved this book! Although I was intimidated by the fact that it is a long book (847 pages), I finished it in about a week! Very thought provoking about time travel and seeing how changing the past can influence the future. A little slow at times, but I found it very well-written and for the most part a page turner. I've never read any of Stephen King's books before, but now I know why he's such a renowned author - excellent! I'm recommending this book to everyone I know!
I was disappointed by this book as I was expecting to enjoy it more. I just found some of the story line to be confusing - there was some kind of competition but it was really confusing about the purpose of this competition or the rules of it. The timelines kind of jumped around a bit so I was often confused about what was happening when. I did like the imagery the author created with how the circus looked and the different magical qualities of it. Overall, I guess I just found it confusing and I never really got sucked into the book as I had hoped.
I just couldn't get into this book. I didn't even finish reading it.
Great book. I enjoyed it. Very interesting perspective of a father of someone accused of murder. Well-written. Would recommend to others.
This is a historical fiction about Renoir's famous painting and how he recruited people to model for the painting and the different stories behind these characters. A fun read, especially if you are a fan of impressionist art!
