My Reviews
There are all kinds of child abuse and this book reveals a very distrubing account of a young man's youth. It was very sad and yet uplifting how he did manage to some how rise above the fray. I felt equally sorry for his step sisters too. The "father" was a mess and should have had his license taken away years ago. Another shame. The book, revisited during our club meeting, provided animated discussion on "what is abuse" and how do you intervene when you suspect a family is just "off."
I found this book to be disturbing and truthfull regarding the loss of control with your daughter. Daughter was heavily involved in drugs, eating disorders and general mayhem and what the mother (and father) did to save the daughter from herself. I don't know if I would have followed the same path, but they did succeed. Until you have been lied to (about serious stuff) by your child you don't know how difficult it is to cope with wayward kids. It's easy to say, "Oh my kid would never do that". Just wait!!!
The book was a difficult read but once you got into the story it was like a Greek tragedy. So much information about the feelings of each participant etc. But when the book finally ends you are left with a bit "What". The author seems to have been told to end the book and she does in less than one chapter. You are told in the first chapter what will happen (players killed) however the epilogue was a disappointment and contrived. I was so disappointed that I spend valuable time reading this book only to hate and question the ending.
