Although the book was fun to read, it did spark some serious discussion.
Historically spellbinding and carefully researched .
This historical recount of the Dust Bowl period in the US, compounded by the depression, gives readers an understanding of daily life and challenges during the "worst hard time." Very informative, yet a compelling page turner.
Salute to the resilience of the 3 main characters.
Interesting parallels between the lives of Eden and Sarah despite the time gap between their concerns.
Erik Larson has once again captured readers by shining light on history that we thought we knew, but didn't really understand at all.
Members thoroughly enjoyed reading McCullough's fact filled book on the brilliant and determined brothers. We are considering reading another one of the two time Pulitizer Prize winning author's books.
Don't finish this book in a public place unless you have access to a box of Kleenex.
This book sparked a lively discussion focusing on the ease with which this catastrophic attack could happen and practical steps to "prep.
This book lead to a lively discussion of professional athletics, drug use in competitive sports, and obsessive parenting.
All of our members thoroughly enjoyed this book. Even though it is historical fiction, it did give us an accurate look at these famous inventors.
Erik Larson brings accurate history to life, even when describing this deadly event.
This book brought to life that very turbulent period in American history when citizens used their freedom of speech to protest the Viet Nam war. One of the students killed at Kent State was Allison Krause, who was from our small town, Churchill, PA. The community was in shock that that could happen on an American campus;. It was inspirational that one of the students, Steve Logan, the main character, was motivated to make a difference standing up to corruption right there in Providence. It's essential all Americans have the courage to speak truth to power.
Very good read!
Our No Pressure Book Club read this book as our March selection. It examined the characters dealing with the "aftermath" of a senseless suicide. The book provided many avenues for discussion.
If you have ever visited the city of Savannah, you will enjoy revisiting the city reading this book and learning more about it's history.
