My Reviews
I looked forward to reading this book as I loved Time Travelers Wife. I was very disappointed at the end of ....Symmetry. Never became invested in the characters, was annoyed more than anything. It obviously was well-written enough to keep me reading until the end - but I just kept hoping it would get better. Would not recommend wasting time on this one.
I think this is one of the most well-written books we have read as a bookclub. I say that because I had to remind myself over and over again that it wasn't Alice who was writing her own story. The topic is certainly a difficult one, but one that we should all be aware of in the end. I am 55 and have found myself questioning everything I forget to do or whenever I find myself standing in a room for no particular reason! I freely recommend this book as an important, engaging read for anyone.
I found this book very difficult to get into and I never felt any connection to Carrie (and she often annoyed me). I even put the book down and read something else, but felt committed enough to my book club to try to finish it. I am glad that I did as I learned a lot about a time in history that is important to our country and finally gained some grudging admiration for Carrie. Our bookclub did have a good discussion as a result of the book and I believe on the whole everyone truly enjoyed the read.
I loved this book. The writing was so good that I felt I was in the tent with the performer or at the midnight feasts. It was a book that I felt was a bit outside of my norm and I am so glad I took the leap - couldn't put it down and would have let the house burn down when I got towards the end! Full of magic on many levels.
