My Reviews
Interesting read. There were holes in the sequence which did not always make sense. The characters could have been developed more. That being said, I still enjoyed the book and there are some good issues for book club discussion.
Varied experiences and backgrounds lead to unexpected friendships during war. There is much sadness and brutality but also acts of kindness, bravery and hope. I cared about the characters and found myself wondering how I would react in their situation.
A view of life in North Korea.
This book gives a glimpse into a world virtually unknown by outsiders. A good book for discussion.
This book has good material for discussion. The characters are shaped (and trapped) by their families and enviroment. They struggle to change their destiny and that of their children.
Our bookclub enjoyed this book. We liked the writing style and found our selves to have much to discuss. The main character's emotions and "loss of self in the daily grind" were easy to relate to. The past memories mingled with present events kept the book positive and interesting.
Our bookclub found much to discuss with the Victorian flower meanings and with the relationship/ detachment issues.
