My Reviews
I really wanted to like this book. The premise seemed interesting and I like suspenseful dramas. However, the deeper I got into the story, the more I had to suspend belief to keep reading. It was so implausible and there were no characters that you could truly like and root for. Very disappointing.
I am constantly amazed by what people will do to fight oppression and to help their fellow man. Although this book is fiction, it paints what I think is a very REAL picture of survival in occupied France. I loved the characters and the story and I think it would make a great discussion.
Told with wit and honesty, this story tells us just how far someone will go to help another human being have a better life. I learned a lot about the ravages of quadriplegia but also about the triumph of the human spirit. Very beautifully written.
Stories about slavery astonish me in that the brutality they depict actually occurred in THIS country and not that long ago. Their stories are heartbreaking but at the same time, they are real.. . . not some made up version of how life was. I am ashamed of my forefathers who may have been a part of this and I rejoice that we have come so far from it.
