My Reviews
We did enjoy the character development and the great writing for a first novel. Baseball, was secondary to the characters and we liked the book to Edgar Satelle a good story.
Outstanding memoir. Not for the faint of heart, graphic life situations. But the poetry of Asante is amazing. So glad our club picked this book.
Members rated this book fairly low. They liked the writing, but disliked the underlying, stereotypical drama between women. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that the movie was better than the book.
I was immediately drawn in to the story of coal and the struggle of miners and their families. Great story, with a fantastic Grisham attorney twist. I loved the book, felt the end was rushed, but don't pass this one by.
If you have a range of age groups in your book club, this book really stimulates some interesting discussion. Younger people cannot believe some of the trials of the early 20th century and also what immigrants when through. Even our most poor could not relate to some of the challenges our ancestors went through. Well written. A true documentary of 1915 poor family in Brooklyn.
