My Reviews
Not much for discussion either. For once, the movie was better than the book. We weren't really sure why this was picked for book club either. It was done by a member who moved away. Good thing, too!
Parts of this were OK, and I thought it would make for a good discussion, but in the end, all we could talk about was the end. It was very disappointing, and yes, we knew the story it was following, but we felt very let down, like we had invested so much in the characters and story, only to feel like it was a waste. And I don't mean just the very end. The whole last 25% or so seemed pointless.
Wonderful writing, interesting story, great discussion. We're now going to read another of his books. I'm partial to historical fiction, anyway and this was a part of history I needed to learn about. All around great read.
We'd heard a lot about this book. One of our members even read it before, but she was the only one who liked it. The story and characters never grabbed us. The writing just wasn't that compelling.
My least favorite of his three books. Most of us enjoyed them, but weren't sure why. The characters are compelling, but that's about it. The writing is very, very simple. This is a great book on a trip or airplane, but as a book club discussion? No.
I saw a review of this that called this "a quiet novel." That's the best description I can imagine for it. Nothing earth-shattering, or portray as such. Just 4 characters' lives, their relationships with one another as they grow up, with lovely prose. If that's your cup of tea, you'll love this one. Everyone in our group did. It turned out to be a really good discussion book, too.
This was our favorite book club meeting. We all got into the Queen spirit, made martinis from the book, and had a wonderful discussion. What's great about this book is that you can discuss the growth of Doreen and her husband, and even the pets, but you can also talk about your own fantasies for adventure and what you would do with a year off. It really made us think about priorities and was quite inspiring. We also had the author call in and she was hysterical, but also answered our questions thoughtfully when needed. All in all, the best book we've read for a book club.
