My Reviews
This novel is set in and truly conveys the South just as the Civil Rights movement was getting started. The story is told through the lives of the southern white women and the black servants who ran their households and cared for their children. It is a story of strength and courage. Stockett captures the emotional climate as she fleshes out her women with distinct and believable personalities.
This novel reminds us of one of the less than glorious times in our country's history. I highly recommend it.
This novel tells of two women in modern day Bombay. One, a servant and the other, her employer. The author, Thrity Umrigar, puts us into the novel with her descriptions of the sights, sounds and smells of this envirement. I felt like lifting my skirts as I entered the slums, and I could almost feel and hear the beatings that Bhima endures. I highly recommend this book.
We follow the protaganist, Okonkwo, a Nigerian from the village of Ibo. There are really two parts to his story; first as a member of his tribal community before the arrival of European missionaries, and second, how his life changes and ends after. Powerfully written and very provocative in the questions Achebe presents.
This book of magic and love puts you right in the middle of fantastic settings. The descriptions of circus, dinners and costumes are so vivid you seem to be inside the book itself. A good "fantasy?" story with many undertones of real relationships and moral questions.
Overall the members of Carpe Librum liked this book. It has mystery, romance and a bit of fantasy. It's a quick read and very satisfying.

I really enjoyed this novel, inspired by actual events in our country's history. The more I read about our historical events, the more I realize that, in school, history is completely white-washed!
The story line brings together two women - one a troubled teen and the other a woman in her 9o's.So different, but oh, so closely connected by their life experiences. Through going back in time to learn of the old ladies history and forward to the present, I read of the way these two helped each other. No spoilers here, just a suggestion that you read this well written story.
